Fuller's

In 1995, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Fuller Smith & Turner partnership, Fuller's commissioned a special, celebration bottle conditioned ale. The results was 1845. A more auspicious beginning the brew could not have had: the inaugural beer's hops were added to the copper by none other than HRH The Prince of Wales, during a royal visit to Fuller's! Since its introduction, 1845 has become a firm favorite with its wonderfully rich flavors helping the beer to win numerous awards around the globe including the CAMRA Champion Bottle Conditioned Beer of Britain.

Bengal Lancer is an exciting, classic India Pale Ale from Fuller's. Brewed to 5% ABV (5.3% in bottle), this ale has been inspired by the history and character of this traditional style of beer. Bengal Lancer has returned to pumps for an extended period between Autumn 2012 and Spring 2013. The beer is pale in colour, full-bodied with a distinctive hoppiness that marks it out as a true India Pale Ale.

Chiswick Bitter is Fuller's popular session strength ale, which derives its name from the area of London where Fuller's is based. This lower strength beer is held in high regard across the South East of England and, like its stablemates London Pride and ESB, has won the prestigious CAMRA Great British Beer Festival, Beer of the Year award, in 1989. In fact, Fuller's is the only brewery in England whose top three brands have won this award: a fitting testament to the skill and dedication of the Fuller's brewers!

Discovery is the first new year-round beer launched by Fuller’s since Chiswick Bitter back in the 1980s. Developed in response to the increasing popularity of lighter golden ales, and always served chilled, Discovery boasts the perfect combination of flavour and refreshment. Since its introduction it has won enthusiastic plaudits from ale and lager drinkers alike. Isn’t it time you made a refreshing discovery too?

Past Masters Double Stout is the second in the series, brewed to a recipe from 4th August 1893 – a time when 'stout' meant 'strong'. Its signature ingredient is Plumage Archer barley, carefully malted and kilned using 19th Century methods. Dark, brown and creamy this beer is brewed to 7.4% ABV and balances a rich fruity aroma with smoky, bittersweet chocolate notes.

ESB was launched into the Fuller's family in 1971, as a winter brew to replace a beer named Old Burton Extra. The potential of the beer was soon realised and ESB was installed as a permanent fixture, creating an immediate impact. Not only was it one of the strongest regularly brewed draught beers in the country (at 5.5% ABV), it was also one of the tastiest, and as the awareness of the beer grew, so did its popularity. ESB's reputation was soon enhanced after being named CAMRA's (Campaign for Real Ale) Beer of the Year in 1978, and the beer has not stopped winning since!

Front Row is a wonderfully moreish 3.7% beer, which will be available throughout February and March in selected Fuller’s pubs. It is a lovely light ruby coloured ale which is certain to quench the thirst even after the toughest battle in the scrum.

While most of Fuller's beers are brewed to be enjoyed, by and large, in pints, we also boast an exceptionally fine strong bottled ale, the formidable Golden Pride, which is designed to be enjoyed in smaller measures. At 8.5% ABV, it is as powerful as some wines, but bursting with flavor. This superb quality premium beer is the equivalent of a Belgian 'Abbey Beer' or barley wine and is arguably the 'grand cru' of Fuller's bottled beers.

First brewed in 1959, HSB (Horndean Special Bitter) is an award-winning, distinctive, high quality premium bitter. HSB was the flagship brew of Horndean's Gales brewery, which was acquired by Fuller's in 2005. Today, HSB is brewed with pride and passion at Chiswick where the Gale's yeast is now alive and well. It continues to delight discerning ale drinkers in its original heartland and win new friends far and wide.

Fuller's London Porter, is widely regarded as the World's Finest Porter: having won awards all over the world, London Porter is regularly voted the number one Porter on beer websites such as www.ratebeer.com, a tremendous accolade to our brewing team. The origins of Porter date back to London in the early eighteenth century, and the beer has seen fame around the world, from Ireland to the USA and Australia. It was the dominant beer style in London for quite some time, and takes its name from the street and river porters of the city who carried goods around the streets.

Known and loved for its distinctive, rounded flavor, London Pride is the award-winning beer for which Fuller’s is most famous. In recent years its popularity has grown to the extent that it is now Britain’s leading premium ale: a welcome fixture in many pubs and off licenses around the country, and now winning new friends abroad. To the beer aficionado looking for the classic English pint, we say this: Whatever you do, take Pride.

Vintage Ale is a truly distinguished bottle-conditioned ale, crafted by Fuller’s Head Brewer, John Keeling. Each vintage is a blend of that year’s finest malt and hops, and of course our unique yeast, creating a unique limited edition brew.

The first beer in the Past Masters series we have chosen to recreate is XX, a strong ale which is perfect for bottle conditioning. Brewed at 7.5% ABV, with the original recipe first used on September 2, 1891, it is dark, rich and full flavoured, with a distinctly warming character. XX is deeply satisfying, and an unforgettable experience for those who love traditional English beer.
