Brewed exclusively for the 2013 Craft Brewers Conference (and a collaborative project with Reyes Beverage Group), Bloodline is an intensely-hopped IPA brewed with Blood Orange peel and juice. According to our Brewmaster Matt Brophy, the result is a flavor profile that harnessed the best aspects of both the hops (Warrior, Citra, and Galaxy) and the citrus. He and his brewing team are very fond of hop-based citrus aromas, so experimenting with actual citrus was a natural extension of that. 2014 version is brewed with Northern Brewer, Citra and Galaxy.

Dead RiseFlying Dog

Summer Ale
5.6% ABV
The name Dead Rise comes from deadrise boats, which are commercial fishing and crabbing vessels designed and built specifically to navigate the unique waterways of the Chesapeake Bay. The bottom near the bow is a V-shape to cut through the often-choppy Bay. Then, it flattens out closer to the stern, making it more navigable in shallow water.” The 5.6 percent alcohol beer brewed with Northern Brewer, CTZ and Cascade hops uses acidulated, rye and malted white wheat malts. These ingredients certainly weren’t chosen at random. The recipe building process for Dead Rise took six months. Flying Dog brewers teamed up with OLD BAY spice experts to create a recipe that would “highlight the indelible character of OLD BAY through bright and refreshing citrus hop character and a crisp, tart finish. OLD BAY is added to the whirlpool imparting a bold aroma followed by hints of flavor throughout the beer. The finish is dry, snappy, and perfect for our hot and humid summers.

To decide on the lineup for our 2015 Brewhouse Rarities, our brewmaster Matt Brophy and his team had to narrow down 45 beer concepts to just eight. And there was just a little pressure from the rest of us. Why? Because they were all of our ideas. Each summer, our entire brewery congregates atop a historic overlook in the Catoctin Mountain Range and teams of our staff — from production to accounting to sales and marketing — pitch ideas for the next year’s Brewhouse Rarities. And once the beers are picked, each team is responsible for everything involved in that beers release, from sourcing ingredients to planning launch events outside of the brewery.
