The fuse is lit, and tons of locally roasted apples are guided by precision and dropped like tiny bombs into the mash. Air raid sirens wail as phase two commences in the brew kettle, with the fusion of a hundred pounds of Apple Jacks® cereal that instantaneously turns to dust. As Defcon 1 approaches, fragments of even more apples are deployed in the fermenter, heightening the threat of flavor shrapnel. An atomic explosion of tart apple will mushroom in your mouth and devastate your senses, as brown sugar and cinnamon help shelter your tastebuds from the fallout.

Exquisitely Peculiar! Within the strangest existence, there is great depth of character. Such is indeed the case for the Albino MONKey. Ordained in the traditional order of Belgian wheat beers, Albino MONKey’s wheat malt backbone is shrouded only by its sublimely complex sweetness. Its motives in its offerings of spicy hops, coriander, orange peel and white pepper spices need not be understood to be appreciated. Simply follow its divine path. Your obedience will be rewarded.

Our first of many iterations using our house ale yeast blend to produce NE style IPA's and ales. Always Forward is a 6.2% NE Style pale ale, hopped with Citra, El Dorado and Centennial. This juicy ale was double dry-hopped and packs punches of pear, watermelon, passionfruit and lemons. Always forward, never back.

Astounding Flying Monkeys is our first iteration in our rotating IPA series, AFM. Brewed with Pale and wheat malts, this Double IPA is full bodied with notes of white wine, grape must and apricot rind. We dry hopped this DIPA twice with heaps of Nelson and Calypso hops to accentuate the beer with fruity dankness.

Our house IPA Palooza was DDH with loads of Azacca hops to shine and showcase it’s hop flavors. Notes of tropical fruit, pear , mango and Virginia Orchards.

This triple entendre of a malty bock beer is swarming with gobs of Virginia wildflower honey that gives B-Sides an earthy, nectarous aroma with a touch of hoppy spiciness. Besides the hard work on this beer by our local Virginia honey bees, inspiration was attained from artists whose true masterpieces materialized on the flip side of an LP. Too many to mention, but to our adored friend William, It Was Really Nothing since you conjectured How Soon Is Now? May the reincarnation of vinyl thwart the death of the B-Sides in this daunting Digital Age.

Chocolate and lager beer lovers unite! It’s the release of BOOM! Choco-o-Lotta Chocolate Lager- detonating on August 1st at noon. A darker Märzen lager is aged over gobs of cocoa nibs and vanilla beans to impart an explosion of luscious, chocolatey flavor amongst the rich, German malts. As you drink in the richness of this lager, your tastebuds cry yes, yes, yes while a chocolatey explosion erupts in your mouth. BOOM! You will never be the same. BOOM! Choc-o-Lotta Chocolate Lager is available on draft only or to-go in any grunt, growler, CANABLE or Blue Ball Mason jar.

Continually offered will be a fresh and unique cask beer that is pulled directly off an authentic Beer Engine.  This unfiltered and unpasteurized cask-conditioned beer is dispensed and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide, to offer a unadulterated taste of what is more modernly (since 1973) referred to as "Real Ale".  Fancy a little strange?

This Belgian Tripel was aged a full year in wild oak barrels with 3 Fonteinen yeast to summon a delectable, fruity sweetness followed by a dry, funky finish. Go Beyond the Ouija to say hello to this old friend, for the table is rumbling, the glass is moving, no I was not pushing that time…it spells T.R.I.P.E.L.

Hey ho, let's go...Blitzkrieg Bock is a revved up black lager brewed with a slew of angst-ridden malts. Opal, Smaragd and Perle hops are piling in the back seat, as healthy additions of cinnamon and cocoa nibs pulsate to the back beat. Blitzkrieg Bock went through a tight wind in some old oak barrels, while simultaneously being intensified with a duo of light roasted local RVA coffees. The brewers are losing their minds worshipping this Punk Anti-Stout.

We've taken our heavenly recipe of Palooza and dry-hopped it entirely and immensely with Citra hops. Loads of mango, guava, and tropical aromas in this one. Juicy and dankness in a glass!

Local coffee roaster, Black Hand Coffee Company, put an indelible stain on our recipe book. In this collaborative affair, we used a special blend of Black Hand’s in-house roasted coffee beans. Freshly crushed light roast coffee beans and roasted Georgia pecans were blended inside of oak barrels with a malty Belgian dubbel style of beer. Strange voices told us to toss more than 100 pounds of sweet, shiny banana runts into our newest sour beer concoction. Things even we cannot understand ensued. Inevitably, hot summer streets and pavements start burning, so give this refreshingly tart elixir a whirl. Now you’re trying to smile but your pucker is so haughty and dire. Cause it’s gonna be a cruel, Cruel Summer.

A Tryst with taste. First of three beers released in celebration of our First Anniversary, the name Delightfully Immoral comes from Mark Twain’s book The Innocents Abroad, which immortalized the famed femme fatales known as grisettes. Subduingly seductive, these dames hailing from as early as the 17th century were famous for serving French miners a farmhouse style of beer called a grisette, a variation of the more lactic saison. Cavorting in their customary grey dresses, not only did these matrons quench the thirst of the hard working man with local beer, but they were known to supplement their income as ladies of the night. Unusual treatments in our grisette include the additions of lavender and heather, a Bière de Garde yeast, and hop varietals including Citra, Simcoe and Galena, along with aging the beer in local Virginia oak wine barrels from Horton vineyards. Earthy, floral scents coalesce with citrusy hops and peppery yeast notes to yield a dry, spritzy finish. “Oh, so charmingly, so delightfully immoral!”.

On candy stripe legs the tripods come, softly through the shadows of the evening sun. Ominous creatures have arrived from deep space, exceedingly parched. They scour and scourge our strange world, until they encounter the liquid that will provide them the sustenance they crave. Starting with a uniquely complex Belgian IPA that is subsequently barrel-aged on oak, these assassins from another world disintegrate the distinct blend of citrusy hops to permeate and calm their souls. Yielding the strangest twist upon their alien lips, they undergo an out of their world experience. Due to the immense power of this golden elixir, peace in the universe will thankfully now endure.

Woodsman Series French farmhouse style bière de garde with apricots (abricots). Garded for 6 weeks in oak barrels. Lovely, dry bière de garde with notes of wheat and subtle fruit esters from fermentation coupled with distinct apricot fruit flavor. The moderate ABV makes for a sessionable, late-summer delight.

A fun twist on a traditional beer. Brewed with pilsner malt and Mandarinia Bavaria hops, this light crisp ale was boiled with limes and kaffir lime leaf to give it a pop of flavor.

Why do supervillains love Freeze Rays? Easy…to trap their arch-nemesis in a solid block of ice and monologue away for hours, while their foe slowly dies of hypothermia and/or boredom. Sure, freezing things with a laser may sound weirdly impractical, but that is before you knew it could be used on Strangeways’ newest concoction, Freeze Ray Eisbock. After benumbing a thick and malty doppelbock for days, we mined the resulting colossal chunks of ice from the vat to extract the pesky water obstructing the full potential of this deliciously decadent libation. Its thick and creamy mouthfeel is interlaced with a prevalent chocolaty richness that seductively satiates. Nevermind where we hide the 10.24% abv, as the Freeze Ray disintegrates any booziness with a mere controlled pull of the trigger.

Munich Helles Lager

The Evil Thirst has been roving on a drought-ridden planet far away from Earth’s bounties, knowing for survival he must set forth on a long journey in hopes of quenching his endless need for refreshment. However, upon arrival on our fair planet, the villain quickly realizes the initial allure to the blue orb – H2O – will not truly satisfy his yearning. Maddened by his dehydration, he is driven to violent destruction, but soon gets even more than he reckoned for when the mighty Hop Howler emerges uproarious amidst the fertile, green landscape. Not only will the evildoer’s thirst be eternally extinguished, but it will also be satiated with voluminous amounts of aromatic, dank and resinous hops. Hop bombs of flavor from Citra, El Dorado, Jarrylo and Pacific Gem are hurled relentlessly, and explode in bursts to coat Evil Thirst’s alien tongue, rendering him harmless in a state of euphoria. Crisis averted, peace is restored throughout the Universe, as our vociferous hero Hop Howler sounds off one last time with a bellowing cry, offering assurance that all, good or evil, shall never go thirsty again.

When Hardcore Punk Metal band Iron Reagan and Strangeways Brewing got to collaborating, two core ideas were immediately at war: wanting to brew a favorite style, the Belgian Tripel, while at the same time desiring to make a dark-as-night ale to pay homage to metal music. Peace was partially restored when we realized we could brew a Belgian Black Tripel. Jelly beans were added to enhance the insanity while at the same time keeping with the essence of the band’s name. Finally, months of aging in oak barrels bring it all back to earth. Now…don’t be a Nancy, and Just Say Go!

Kiss Off! is a sour cherry saison who would care to be loved, so could it be you? Continuing Strangeways Brewing's foray into sour beers, Kiss Off! is a distinctively mouth puckering libation that utilizes lactobacillus. This sour beer is then aged on sweet cherries for nearly a month to impart a distinctive cherry aroma with a robust cherry flavor. Finally local Virginia wildflower honey is added in secondary fermentation for an additional week of blissful aging. The final product has a sourness that is slightly cloaked by the cherry flavors and is followed by a lingering honey sweetness that cuts pleasantly through the usual dryness of a saison. Kiss Off! will most definitely go down on your permanent record.

This is the 2nd brew in our Legalize It! IPA series. A collaboration between STRANGEWAYS BREWING and Kulture, this IPA will feature an entirely new blend of dank hops for a refreshing, citrusy and piney summer beer.

Sparked by the pursuit of fresh, resinous, tropical, and dank, hoppy India Pale Ales, the Legalize It IPA series was cultivated to relax your body and open your mind. Scarce hop varietals will be specially sourced from choice growers around the globe. Our first strain, Tosh.OG, highlights a tetrad of aromatic hop varietals, conscientiously administered to heighten your senses. Come…sit…and inhale the pungent fruit spices radiating from the experimental Jarrylo hop, as the alluring aromas of ripe melon, pear, and stone(d) fruit emanate from hops of Pacific Gem and El Dorado. Wait…is that…yes, the unequivocal, resinous bouquet and flavor of bright, tropical fruits, gushing from the Citra hop. As you bring the slickness of the vessel to your lips, allow the concoction to dance on your tongue and speak to your soul. Let the feeling of that first euphoric sip entrance your body the more you draw it in, because that’s the best thing you can do. So legalize it, don’t criticize it. Now you’re feeling irie mon.

Phantasmic East Coast IPA with Lemon Berry.

The Invasion Begins! Gather ye Martians while ye may, Saucers are still a-flying; And this same Alien that brews today, Tomorrow will be imbibing. It does not require the Fathers of Science Fiction to alert you that after partaking of a bottle-conditioned Martian Spring, your life will surely change. The prominent hop character of Columbus, Simcoe, Citra, Galena, and Centennial hops crash lands with the light, fruity esters of a Bière de Garde yeast. Oak wine barrels served dual purpose as vessels for the month long fermentation and maturation, as well as dry-hopping capsules. The invasion begins as you embark on your own thrilling wonder story. 750 ml bottle conditioned bottles at brewery and in the market and very limited draft at the brewery only.

The Mixolydian Rag Rye Bock is our first foray into bottom fermented lager brewing. Inspired by the soaring guitar solos of Jerry Garcia, Mixolydian Rag is light and refreshing, yet complex and engaging with a combination of earthy sweetness, balanced by herbal hop notes. Rye malt provides a toasty spiciness while just a touch of smoke meanders through the flavor and aroma. German Magnum, Opal, Smaragd and Perle hops lend just the right amount of bitterness and herbal complexity. The lager yeast is a culture from the legendary Andechs Abbey in Bavaria.

Niagara white wine grapes, skin intact, are freshly pressed to form a special grape must, a pivotal ingredient in our newest sour beer recipe. Pilsner malt, honey malt, and Golden Naked Oats prove steady in the background, while a mixed fermentation, including the use of champagne yeast, saison yeast, and lactobacillus, aids in developing subtle complexities and a nuanced character in each and every sip. Don’t be led astray as this refreshingly tart and quaffable hybrid beer straddles the line between ale and wine. Must be nice to have such a pedigree noting ties to France, Belgium, and upstate New York.

The wondrous gas nitrogen is delicately injected into one of our exquisitely dark concoctions to deliver a smooth, silky, creamy and textured libation to beguile your senses. Remember to continually think strange, drink strange.

Nottingham Striker is our light and easy drinking English ale, brewed with a variety of specialty malts for a complex, sweet, session beer. Lightly hopped with Perle and Horizon hops to add subtle notes of green tea, spicy pepper and herbs. Calm and relaxing.

We are excited to unleash this bulldog of a sour beer that was a collaborative effort with The Beer Den, an eclectic mix of passionate and discerning beer aficianados, who hail from a variety of professions inside as well as outside of the craft beer industry. "Louder Than Blueberry Bombs” We hope you can learn to love this big, bold, funky Brett beer, which spent well over a year in oak barrels. Assemble the ways, for if it’s not love, then it’s this blueberry bomb that will bring us together. If it seems a little strange, well…that’s because it is. Oscillate Wildly was conceived to rebuke the beer those macros constantly brew, which says nothing to us about our lives. Message received, loud and clear.

Second of three beers released in celebration of our First Anniversary, Placebo Pils underwent cutting-edge experimentation with a variety of hopping techniques to disseminate a total of seven different hop varietals amid this amped up pilsner (Cascade, Centennial, Citra, Galena, Palisade, Opal, and Saphir). For irritating symptom relief, mash hopping was prescribed to add a citrusy, piney, and spicy character; hop bursting with late addition hops was dispensed throughout the elixir to enhance its IBU’s; and dry hopping during the cold lagering process was administered to accentuate the aromatic hop bouquet. The trio of these unusual techniques were precisely orchestrated to alleviate and sustain the cure you so desire. Ergo the placebo effect becomes a pervasive phenomenon.

You’re scared of Room 237, ain’t you?  This Bière d’Hiver is a rustic French country ale notoriously contemplated in the Winter of 1970, although this beer took just a little less than five miserable months to contrive.  It does not take ESP to perceive the intriguing aromas and flavors of cinnamon, brown sugar and Belgian Candi syrup.  Undergoing extreme isolation in oak barrels de Trump, do not Overlook this seductively potent winter warmer.  As they say, all work and no play…

Hoards of helpless pumpkins were viciously plucked from the vine, carted through the dark hollows, and brutally slaughtered on the crisp, cool All Hallows’ Eve of 2014. Their corpses forcefully turned inside out with a cleaver, to expose their juicy, tender flesh. The results of the aftermath then laid bare, atop hellish flames rising from the underworld, as their meat was meticulously charred to unveil their tantalizing flavors. All in preparation to meet their final maker and liquid tormentor. An experiment in mixed strain fermentation, the precious wort was first soured with lactobacillus, and then progressed to primary fermentation with the addition of a savage Belgian yeast. The resulting concoction was then laid to rest for nearly a year, oak barrel aged with a blend of roasted pumpkins, spices, and a third yeast addition of Brettanomyces from 3 Fonteinen. Resign yourself and accept your fate to (try) Rot•In•Hell.

Venezuelan rum barrels were delivered to Strangeways on the day of Gabriel García Márquez’s death, April 17, 2014. Known affectionately as Gabo, and of whom the Colombian president called “the greatest Colombian who ever lived”, we brewed a unique tribute beer to honor the life of this tremendous literary artist who wrote the Nobel Prize winning novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Soledad means Solitude). Under no established style guidelines, Soledad was crafted entirely with South American cuisine in mind, and everything from the fruits to the yeast were specially chosen based on traditional recipes from the continent. Colombian bananas, toasted coconut, Piloncillo raw cane sugar, passion fruit, mamey sapote, and fresh mangoes were all used in the process, and the elixir went through nearly half a year of aging on Venezualan rum barrels. The rich taste is fruity and tropical with touches of hoppy citrus and spice, complemented with mysterious shadows of coconut and chocolate and, of course, rum!

From a legend whose origins are traced to Native American Algonquian peoples come tales of an enormous creature known as the Wendigo. Possessing characteristics part human and part monster, these beasts were said to emerge from people indulging in the ancient taboo of cannibalism. These malevolent, supernatural beings possessed great spiritual power, and were strongly associated with winter, coldness, famine, and starvation. Embodiments of gluttony, greed, and sheer excess, these Hinterlanders were never satisfied after consuming a person, and were constantly on the prowl for fresh victims in attempts to quench their lustful, never-ending desires. This barleywine, aged a solid year in oak barrels with Black Mission figs, exudes similar powers, calling one on a hunt to quench an unstoppable thirst. The Houblonic Belgian IPA’s namesake was derived by crossing the French word for “Hop” with an ever so slight nod to arguably the best Gangsta rap album ever. This potent potable comes armed to the teeth with five distinct hop varieties, including aggressive whole leaf dry hopping. Start your guesses with multiple “C” hops, but note the addition of the new experimental hop variety Azacca. Collaborative project between Head Brewer Mike Hiller and long-time friend and metal/punk music industry icon, drummer Dave Witte. This Belgian Strong Golden Ale is a nod to a beer formulated by some fellow Mad Brewers that changed Witte’s life and cemented his life-long devotion to craft beer. This bottle conditioned ale, which underwent oak barrel aging, utilizes white candy sugar to add a pleasant sweetness, and Nugget, Magnum, and Horizon hops for balance. Enjoy fresh as well as procure more to store in a cool area away from direct light to age into divine bliss.

In collaboration with the iconic folks from Mamma Zu, Edo's Squid, Dinamo & 8 1/2, we sought to sanctify the religious experience of their world class tiramisu as a brew. This luscious porter underwent months of rum barrel aging with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, and coffee from local roaster Black Hand. The Radler style was invented in the Roaring 20’s by Bavarian Franz Xaver Kugler. The story goes that Kugler had arranged for the construction of a twelve mile bike trail through the forest from Munich straight to his establishment, in an attempt to improve business by catering to a post WWI emerging movement of recreational cycling amongst the working class. A good problem/bad problem arose when 13,000 cyclists descended upon his beer garden on a fine Saturday in June of 1922. While Kugler counted heads, he quickly surmised that he did not have enough beer to quench the thirst of all his patrons. Being a sharp businessman, the quick-thinking entrepreneur remembered he had several thousand cases of lemon soda in his cellar, a beverage that had proven a tough sell to the beer-loving Bavarian public. To save the day, while at the same time liquidate some virtually useless inventory, Kugler mixed his lager beer with the lemon soda. To further entice the cyclists to try his new creation, he dubbed the drink the Radler, which is Bavarian dialect for the German word Radfahrer, or cyclist in English. He whimsically told his customers he had developed the mixture to keep them upright on their bikes during their journey back to the city. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated yearly between October 31st and November 2nd throughout Mexico and other countries around the world to honor the deceased. Marigolds, sugar skulls, as well as favorite foods and beverages are left at gravesites as gifts to encourage visits by the souls. Strangeways exalts this tradition by brewing a celebratory stout with agave nectar, Mexican cinnamon, and an assortment of chili peppers including Anaheim, jalapeño, poblano and serrano. After fermentation, the elixir is aged in Mexican tequila barrels with Guatemalan cacao nibs and ghost peppers to give it just a “bit” more heat… Vatos Muertos =Dead Dudes

The name Stingo, derived from a fashionable slang word in the 1700’s for a strong or old English ale, likely comes from the sharp or “stinging” flavor arising from this barrel-aged style of beer. Gigantic amounts of malt were split between two separate mashes, and then blended back into the kettle to provide an extremely solid backbone into which dark candi syrup and coconut sugar were intertwined. Virginia Stingo then spent nine months maturing in oak barrels that originally housed red wine from Virginia’s Horton Vineyards. The result is a big, boozy, yet balanced ale, meant to be sipped and savored like a fine red wine. Get Stung!

Woodsman Series An unrefined Virginia gentlemen is lured deep into the woodlands by the thrill of the hunt. Patience is his creed absent creature comforts that often come few and far between. His mind hearkens what Virginia native Thomas Jefferson once said: “With great risk comes great reward”. With this he seeks out full flavors enhanced by local Virginia bourbon, while at the same time harboring the desire to avoid excessive booziness and burn, which could detract from the smooth character and malty sweetness of the luscious, deep red elixir he so fervidly craves. A rapid flavor assault wets his appetite and courses through his veins as zings of bourbon resonate. His quarry in hand, the Virginia Vulgarian reveres the potion’s art of being quite approachable in its manageable 6.66% ABV.

If a beer was to be named after a comic book sound effect, Strangeways newest sour beer would have to be called “WHAP!”. These wooden vessels provide the perfect habitat for Brettanomyces, whose servitude artistically brings the funk. Spawned from a collaboration with our cohorts at Capital Ale House, the origins of this cloudy, sour, wheat beer style date back to the 16th century in the region of northern Germany in and around Berlin. Dubbed “The Champagne of the North” by Napolean’s troops, this refreshing beer, brewed by Frederick the Great himself, can be enjoyed as is…or if adventurous, inject a blast of flavor by allowing the addition of traditional flavoured syrups such as Himbeersirup (Raspberry) or Waldmeistersirup (Sweet Woodruff made from wild baby’s breath). Your senses will witness a sharp tartness beneath a dry, fruity funkiness bred by the wild Brettanomyces claussenii yeast fermentation. Don’t forget that change will save you.

The first offering in the Woodsman Series, Ümlaut Böktoberfest is a dark, luscious Bavarian-style lager beer that spent six weeks lagering in oak barrels at 35 degrees fahrenheit. It is a twisted version of the classic German Märzen/Oktoberfest beer popular throughout the autumn season. The Strangeways treatment is a strong lager that boasts a malty, earthy sweetness and includes a subtle touch of smoked malts. German Opal and Smaragd hops round out the balance and lend just the right touch of herbal and floral notes to the flavor and aroma. The oak barrels utilized initially housed Rebel Yell bourbon, and then more recently held a Trump Winery product called Cru, which is a unique fortified white port-style wine with an 18% abv. These two previous barrel inhabitants set the stage for this beer to dazzle and shine during its debut performance. As well as add a dynamic complexity balanced with subtle nuances to make you want to celebrate Oktoberfest every day with a Maß of Ümlaut Böktoberfest. O'zapft is! Prost!
