Without changing the Brown Ale’s integrity, we have created a bigger, celebratory version to be enjoyed in its honor. Seven types of barley malt yield a deep, rich body evoking biscuit, chocolate, coffee, and caramel flavors. Our house ale yeast strain adds a level of fruity esters, and a moderate hop bite combines with alcohol heat to balance it out.

Legend Barleywine is generously hopped to balance the huge malty sweetness. Hops account for the bitter and spicy flavors in a beer. We also “Dry Hopped” this one, giving it a nice spiced-floral aroma. Look for a very rich, ruby colored, robust strong beer with an attitude. Tastes reminiscent of caramel, chocolate, dried fruit (prunes, raisins) are evident at first, followed by hints of licorice and pine flavors. Expect a lingering finish with plenty of warming alcohol.

Limited production bourbon barrel version of their doppelbock. Richmond, Virginia has many well-known and many times told urban legends. One of the most popular is of a black dog that is said to guard a child's grave. Some believe the iron statue of the black dog resided in front of a Richmond Shop many years ago. During her short life, the little girl would pet and talk to the dog as she passed on her way to school. When she died of scarlet fever, the statue was given to her family in order to avoid being melted down for the war effort, and placed by her grave in Hollywood Cemetery. The dog has a personality of his own and has been reportedly discovered looking in various directions. He is said to come to life if he feels the need to protect his young mistress. Legend Guardian Dog Dopplebock makes use of Vienna and dark Munich malts as the base, also incorporating Cara-Munich, Aromatic, and Chocolate malts for a hefty, toasty beer in flavor and aroma. Hops are used only for a counter to the malt sweetness. No aroma hops are added. Expect a deep mahogany color, a rich malty aroma, and a complex flavor that truly celebrates malted barley in its various forms. Look for plenty of biscuity and bready flavors, accented by caramelized sweetness, finishing smooth and mellow with hints of chocolate.

This beer is an excellent pair to most any meal, especially meat dishes and desserts. Or it can serve as a meal on its own.

A crisp and well balanced session beer

Due to explosive sales of this year’s Oktoberfest, we’ll be releasing Legend Chocolate Porter a little earlier than normal. We tweaked the recipe this year by adding some additional dark malts to the mash. A touch of natural cocoa extract is added to the finished beer for a rich, robust Porter with plenty of roasted, coffee, and of course, chocolate flavors. Always a favorite during the holiday season.

This collaborative beer and the second Urban Legend Release is a tribute to one of Williamsburg's best kept secrets: the Crim Dell Bridge. Brewed in collaboration with Geoff Logan from AleWerks, the Crim Dubbel (an Abbey Dubbel) tastes of fig, raisin, and dark fruit with mild fruitiness and a complex spicy ester profile.

Our Hefeweizen is 45% malted wheat, and 55% barley malt. Much of the character of this beer comes from its unique yeast, which is not filtered out, so it tends to leave the beer cloudy. The wheat portion of this ale creates a light, crisp, dry brew perfect for drinking on a hot day. The beer is lightly hopped with Saaz, but the aroma and most of the flavor of this beer come from the wheat beer yeast. Beer Geek Stuff: Original gravity: 11.8„a Plato, final gravity 2.0„a P Lightly hopped with Mt. Hood and Saaz. Hazy white-yellow colored served unfiltered and cloudy. Brewed with 55% Vienna malt and 45% wheat malt. Fermented with authentic German wheat beer ale yeast.

Urban Legend Series #4 The Urban Legend: The Urban Legend argues Charlottesville was the inspiration for Dr. Suess’ children’s book, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” This timeless tale references the “Whos down in Whoville,” whom UVA affiliates interpret as “Hoos down in Hooville.” Those who embrace the legend believe Dr. Suess applied to the University of Virginia, but when he was not accepted, decided to live in a house way up on the hill to “look down on” the University. This reflects the story of the Grinch that lives above Hooville, looking down on the town with anger and disgust.

The Imperial Harvest Ale is befitting to welcome the fall season. This autumnal brew pours a bright, copper color. The rich malts are complemented by copious amounts of local Cascade hops, harvested at Whipple Creek Farm. In the final brewing stages, we wet hop the Harvest ale so the Cascade variety adds an additional citrus/grapefruit character to the flavor and aroma.

A big, crisp Ale that is hopped to the extreme. A Combination of Pale Ale, Bonlander Munich and Carapils Malts to which a very, very, generous amount of hops has been added gives a balanced 126 IBU beer.

A step above mass produced lager beers, Legend Lager offers the comfort of easy drinkability while also bringing a depth of flavor due to our use of 100% barley malt, yeilding a pure, bright malt flavor and a medium body. Modest hopping and cool fermentation temperatures make for a smooth character and a clean finish.

Fermented on a California Common yeast at warmer, ale-like temperatures, this strong lager’s profile could have been a train wreck if it were not for careful planning. We blend rich malt varieties with crisp, sharp hops for a deft balance. Fruity yeast esters are present up front and lead the way into a warming malt body. The finish is crisp and dry. 7% alc. by vol.

Pouring a vibrant pale orange, this traditional French/Belgian farmhouse ale is sturdy yet sessionable at 6.5% alc. by vol. Yeast derived fruity and spicy (citrus, pepper) aromas are layered on a soft malt canvas. Moderate levels of herbal, spicy noble hops add complexity. The finish is tart, dry and quenching.

The berry esters come to the forefront as you initially sip this beautiful deep golden lager. While enjoying the rest of the experience you will see some wonderful malt overtones with a mild balance of hops that finishes off dry with you wanting more. At the convenience of local Virginia beer-drinkers who can’t voyage to Munich for the 16-day Oktoberfest celebration, we bring you Legend Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest, a Marzen-style Lager, is a celebration of malt harmony. This copper hued Lager is brewed on a base of Vienna malt and owes its rich flavor to generous helpings of Munich and Caramel malt-varieties. With every sip you’ll discover flavors of toast, honey, and caramel sweetness. Built on a low ABV and strong malt backbone, this is the most appropriate celebratory fall beer.

Our American style Pale Ale is a hop lover's dream. We craft this copper colored ale to supply a moderate bitterness and an aggressive hop flavor and aroma. Willamette hops pitched early in the boil give a clean, soft bitterness. Late kettle hops include Northern Brewer, Simcoe, and Chinook for plenty of pungent pine and citrus character. Judicious amounts of four specialty malts add counter and depth. Expect a medium bodied brew with an assertive, complex flavor and a dry finish.

Pilsner is the most imitated style of beer in the world. Prior to the 1840's all beers were dark and cloudy. In 1842 a new brewery in Pilsen, Bohemia introduced a brew that was golden and clear. Our version has a deep gold color and a firm malt background. The emphasis is on the assertive hopping with Hallertau and Sterling varieties. Expect a beer that is substantial in body while finishing with a crisp dryness. Spicy and floral hop flavors are evident throughout.

Incidents dating back to the early 1900s suggest a man wearing a white bunny suit with long floppy ears terrorized innocent Northern Virginians. In one such instance, a man and his fiancé were foolhardily parked alone and became startled by a knocking outside their window. Moments later, their front windshield was smashed with a weighty axe, and through the specks of shattered glass, they saw a man dressed head to toe in a bunny costume. Again, the Bunny Man was identified intimidating Fairfax County residents—he bludgeoned possessions with an axe and induced fear in the community with his savage behavior. Legend Brewing Co, in collaboration with Favio Garcia (Brewmaster, Lost Rhino), shed light on this urban legend with the creation of the “RIP Ale,” a Red IPA. Specialty malts evoke a soft, drinkable profile, while Amarillo and Chinook hops add a tropical aroma and piney bitterness. If there’s a better boozy representation of a bunny suit wearing ax-murderer, we’ve yet to try it. Though the story is cryptic and one to keep you up at night, Legend Brewing Co. and Lost Rhino transforms the terror of the murderous Bunny Man into imbibing enjoyment.

So Wee in “Scottish” means a lot. So, in “Scottish” this beer style is a lot heavy. This sweet and complex ale is warming and deceptively smooth. A long kettle boil provides caramelization of the wort. A touch of peat smoked malt adds a faint level of earthy smoke. A cool fermentation temperature gives an intense and clean malt flavor. Legend Wee Heavy pairs well with rich, mild cheese (brie, havarti) beef, game, pork and just about any dessert

This Special Spring Stout starts off with a dry roasty malt flavor and a bit of chocolate in the background. The addition of smoked malt rounds out the full rich flavor of the beer. Light hopping is added for balance. About 40% smoked malt.

Urban Legend: While preparing for a night attack, Confederate Lieutenant General Stonewall Jackson was hit three times in a friendly crossfire. Three hits to his hand, elbow and shoulder necessitated the amputation of Jackson’s left arm. Emotionally distraught, the legend suggests General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, said, “You have lost your left arm, but I have lost my right,” referring to his “right-hand” in command, Lieutenant General Stonewall Jackson. Legend has it, Jackson’s arm never made it to the Confederacy’s burial site, for Jackson’s comrade in war, Reverend Beverly Lacy, deserved a more warranted burial. He took Jackson’s swaddled arm to Jackson’s plantation, Ellwood, and buried the arm in the family cemetery.

Six Months of aging brings a soft smoothness to this sweet, complex ale. The result is a “sipping beer” that doesn’t seem like one. By this we mean that Legend Tripel is a deceptively strong beer to be shared with friends and family in celebration and moderation. Legend Tripel is brewed on a Belgian abbey style yeast strain which imparts combinations including banana, clove, apple, pear, even bubblegum. Serve with mild cheeses, roasted pork or turkey.

Warmer weather is drawing near, and Legend Brewing Co. is releasing a new ale to revel in the spring season. For this season’s release, Legend married its enthusiasm for classical beer styles and modernized approach to brewing to create the Legend Ütebier. The name Ütebier mirrors the Norwegian Ütepils, but is infused with German character. The Norwegian-style Ütepils loosely translates to “the first beer you have outside on a sunny day.” We decided to rejuvenate this style to create a unique Ale for the coming of spring. Ütebier pours a deep orange color and the mouthfeel is very crisp. Honey malts evoke a delicate sweetness, which is balanced out by the subtle hop bite. Additional Amarillo hops are added towards the end of the boil to bring out a light, tropical aroma.

Comparable to the barley-based regular Bockbier, a Weizenbock is the strong version of an unfiltered Weissbier or Hefeweizen. It is usually made with 60 to 70% wheat malt (German law requires that a Weizenbier, regardless of strength, be made from at least 50% wheat). The other 30 to 40% tend to be so-called Pils, Vienna or Munich malts. These are pale to amber, and sometimes slightly caramelized barley malts that give the beer a full-bodied mouthfeel, a rich and satisfying malty finish, and—depending on the barley malt's color—a more or less opaque appearance. While regular Bockbiers are lagers, Weizenbocks are all ales. They are fermented with a special yeast that gives the brew a slightly spicy, clove-like flavor. It’s available now in keg, but will be available in Twenty Two Once in the near future.

West Point Light IPA. This exclusive small-batch India Pale Ale features a subdued malt backbone that allows its fresh hop flavor to dominate your palate, while packing an 8.3% ABV punch. This IPA was conceived with a starting gravity of 16.7 degrees Plato and was brewed with Millennium, Motueka, Willamette hops. We then dry-hopped it with a Moteuka and Citra hop blend that contributes to a floral, citrus, and tropical fruit flavor profile. This beer should be consumed as fresh as possible in order to launch your olfactory senses into a full-throttled hop experience!

To show our appreciation for our great friends at the James River Outdoor Coalition and one of the dams in particular, we’ve named our Summer Seasonal in honor of the iconic Z Dam which connects Pony Pasture to William’s Island. This pale-gold ale sports a light body and a clean malt flavor. Refreshing and quenching, Z Dam evokes an acute zestiness driven by a balance of late kettle hops and the addition of ginger, orange, and lime in the boil. Our Z Dam Ale is perfect to enjoy while basking in the sun on your patio, or when toasting a successful descent through the rapids of the mighty James River.
