When we decided to resurrect the Big DIPA, we knew that we needed to make it bigger and better. We’ve brought the beer back with the same 10.5%ABV as before, the same massive amounts of hops as before, but this time, we’ve aged it on oak spirals. Oak spirals suspended in solution allow more surface area to come into contact with the beer increasing the oak presence without increasing exposure time. This results in a smoother oak flavor and further compliments the extraordinary hop characteristics. Cheers!

Our brewers modeled this black IPA after Loose Cannon, with a slight change: it’s almost as if they burnt the brew. Deep-dark ruby, Black Cannon has a roasted character from Blackprinz and Roasted Barley malts, but a heaping portion of hops—in the kettle, hopback, and fermenter—impart flavor and aroma. Floral and pine notes show up in the nose. The mouthfeel is very smooth.

We partnered with local coffee producer Chesapeake Bay Roasting Co. to produce this intriguing ale. Rich porter flavors are enhanced by roast coffee notes and rounded out by bourbon barrel aging, creating a brew of bewitching character.

Born out of our Single Cannon single hop IPA series, Citra Cannon proved to be the most popular offering. Brewed with a ridiculous amount of 100% Citra hops, this beer is dank, juicy, and packed full of Citra hop flavor. This malty lager is our most award-winning beer: it took gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival from 2006 to 2010. Cutlass Amber has a toasted, biscuity character. The slight sweetness comes from Crystal malt. Vienna malt contributes a remarkable smoothness and Munich malt gives an amber color and delicate aroma. Tettnang hops infuse the beer with a slight earthiness. Formerly named Heavy Seas Märzen, Cutlass Amber is our second best-selling beer. In 2012, Cutlass Amber won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in the Vienna Lager category.

Dark and earthy, this robust porter exhibits rich mocha-like complexity. "Deep Six" is a water depth of 6 fathoms measured using a sounding line. Let’s hope the quaffable, dry finish keeps all hands on deck.

Glacial Drift is an ever evolving cold weather release brewed to keep you warm as you float upon the frozen seas. Each year will bring a new recipe. This year’s variation is a rich brown ale brewed with ginger, molasses and winter spices. English malt provides familiar comfort while the unexpected ABV lurks just below.

This easy-drinking session beer pours a deep golden color. It smells slightly floral and herbal, thanks to a hopback full of Cascade and Centennial hops. Gold is tasty and refreshing, with a round mouthfeel. In 2010, it took awards at both the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.

Just released our newest seasonal – “Holy Sheet”. From the centuries-old tradition of Belgian Abbey monks comes our Uber Abbey Ale (9%). We’ve added copious amounts of spicy, floral German hops to a ready, rich malt base to create this expression of regional collaborative ingenuity. Employing a generous dose of locally malted barley and massive dry-hopping, this lager can only be categorized as a “Hoppelbock”.

Fruity, refreshing, and robust, this final edition of Letter of Marque is brewed in the Belgian style, with a blend of herbs and peels. A hopback loaded with chamomile and orange peels imparts zest. The recipe was formulated by two Baltimoreans, Clay Wright and Nick Boylan, our Letter of Marque Homebrew Competition winners. Enjoy it with or without an orange wedge!

Our flagship beer, Loose Cannon wins people over at first smell. The carefully cultivated interplay of Simcoe, Palisade, and Centennial creates a most fragrant IPA—its nose bursts with notes of grapefruit, herbs, and pine. Bitterness is somewhat subdued by the floral quality that pervades the taste. The color is burnished gold, and the mouthfeel is creamy. A strong malt backbone balances out the triple-hopped beer. Its nickname, Hop3, comes from the brewing process: our brewers hop Loose Cannon in the boil, the hopback, and the fermenter. It won a second place CAMRA award at the 2010 Great British Beer Festival.

Plank II features a Doppelbock style lager matured with specially treated Poplar and Eucalyptus wood planks. Look for rich malty flavors along with woody notes.

Cigar City collab

This full-bodied imperial stout pours an opaque mahogany color with a tan head. Its smell is dominated by notes of roasted coffee beans, with a slight hint of chocolate, but Simcoe and Fuggles hops add complexity to the aroma. The roasted barley is detectable in the taste, and this complements the bitterness from the Warrior hops—balancing out the sweetness from the load of malts used in brewing Peg Leg. A creamy mouthfeel makes this a smooth, utterly drinkable beer.

Phantom Ship is an exciting Belgian-style tripel aged in bourbon barrels. Goldenrod in color with a dense head and creamy mouthfeel, this robust, bold brew presents phenolic flavors of white pepper and peach skin from the warm fermentation, along with vanilla and subtle spiciness from the bourbon-barrel aging.

“A deep garnet hued brew with rich caramel malt flavors dominate the nose and pallet. Fruity esters of plum, raisin, and dates abound,” says Christopher Leonard, Heavy Seas Brewmaster and Operations Manager. “A hint of roasty chocolate compliments the evident alcohol while vanilla, almond, clove, and tannic notes from the diverse wood treatment contribute a mysterious complexity. This iteration of the Plank series is aged on “planks” of retified Poplar, retified Cherry, Jamaican Allspice, and Cuban Cedar.”

At Heavy Seas, we brew a traditional English-style pale ale with our own East Coast twist: UK Fuggles and Goldings dominate the flavor of Powder Monkey, but has subtle notes of citrus and flower from Cascade hops added in the boil and hopback. Brass in color, Powder Monkey, like all of our beers, is well balanced: distinct bitterness and a slight malt sweetness characterize the taste. In 2010, it won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup; in 2008, it won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival.

Riptide white IPA is a beer brewed with a malt body similar to a Belgian style Wit with loads of torrified wheat. It’s hopped like an IPA, but we use a unique blend of Czech Saaz, French Strisselspalt, Calypso, Centennial and Cascade hops to create a big citrus nose and flavor with floral accents. To complete the feel of the wit style, we push the beer through our hopback which is loaded with Spanish sweet orange peel, Curaçao bitter orange peel, coriander, and a generous helping of hops. It’s fermented with a classic Belgian Wit yeast which provides all of the fruity and spicy notes you’d expect. We then blast the tank with our hop cannon which is loaded with Calypso, Strisselspalt, and Citra hops and more orange peel. The beer is then lightly filtered to retain all of the exceptional yeast character.

A 6% ABV Barrel-aged Rye Wit. Sixteen weeks of white wine barrel-aging gives this Rye Wit beer a complexity never before seen in the style. With aromas of light fruit, spice, and citrus, balanced by a spicy malt backbone, the third installment in the Partner Ships series is sure to delight the senses.

Our Siren Noire Imperial Chocolate Stout has been revamped. We’ve aged it for three weeks in bourbon barrels, which gives the beer darker notes of raisin and fig. We’ve also tripled the amount of chocolate nibs and added vanilla bean. A mix of dark malts gives Siren Noire a well-rounded body that is decidedly chocolatey—but without being extraordinarily sweet. Mt. Hood hops contribute a fruity hop profile, with notes of black currant.

Arguably our most well-balanced beer, Small Craft Warning seems at once hop-forward and malt-forward; our brewers debate over which flavor force prevails in the beer. Small Craft exemplifies a robust pilsner—it’s crisp, well-carbonated, and slightly sweet. The beer is characterized by a firm malt backbone and a pronounced hop character. A fine aroma, from an array of hops, completes this quaffable beer.

This is not your average summer ale. We’ve created the most refreshingly delicious American wheat ale. Brewed with lemon and orange peel, Smooth Sail finishes with a citrus kick. At 4.5% ABV you’ll have your new pool beer. Available on draft and cans only, it’s the perfect beer for trips to the park, hiking, or just sitting on the beach with your friends. A summer day. American Amber Lager/Ale Hybrid 9 Baltimore Brewery Collaboration

Our Great Pumpkin enhanced by aging in bourbon barrels. We add the pumpkin during the mash at precisely the right time to create just the perfect balance of malt, hops, pumpkin and spice.

Brewed with imported German malt and hops, blasted with a dry-hopped canon of American hops, it’s bound to twist your lederhosen.

A variation on the brewery’s flagship beer, Loose Cannon IPA, the new citrus IPA showcases explosive tropical fruit aromas and flavors. TropiCannon clocks in at the same 7.25% ABV as its cousin, but has a modified hop profile, and is augmented with blood orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon flavors

Our “winter warmer” ale, brewed with copious helpings of English malts and US and English hops, a ruddy hued “Imperial ESB” in style. Full malty flavors dancing with powerful hop aromas and a lingering, firm hop bitterness.

Aged for 6 weeks in Jamaican Rum barrels, this Imperial Red offers a full malt body dominated by toast, chocolate, and caramel notes. Rum barrel aging imparts a rich buttery rum character along with oaken vanilla notes. Ginger offsets the overall sweetness by adding its own drying zing.

Aged in Jamaican rum barrels, this year’s Gingerbread Weizen Doppelbock offers spicy clove-like notes from German weizen yeast. The hops blend harmoniously with heavy doses of Caramel and Aromatic malts. Actual gingerbread was used during the brewing process to give this special offering a subtle holiday-infused taste.
