In the 19th century, California brewers were unable to control fermentation temperatures so they were obliged to use their lager yeast at temperatures warmer than customary for traditional lager.
We used a new hop variety from the state of Oregon for bittering, flavor and aroma in this beer. Very few brewers have had a chance to try out Meridian. We are excited by the opportunity. |
| Helles and Back | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Lager 5% ABV–22 IBU | A golden lager in the traditional Munich brewing style. This is what you find on tap in Bavaria instead of a Pilsener. To appease the Lager Gods, we used Saaz and Hallertau for aroma. At 7.5% ABV and 80 IBU's it is balanced, but robust - like a Rhino on the veldt - it's graceful, but will not stand down. Megafauna pays tribute to the large animals that still roam the planet. | Native Son | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Saison 6% ABV | Lost Rhino Brewing Company announces the release of its first beer brewed entirely from ingredients sourced in the
state of Virginia. On Wednesday, September 4, 2013 Native Son will be released at the Lost Rhino Brewery Tasting
Room in Ashburn, Virginia.
The idea of brewing an all-Virginia beer has been the aspiration of Favio Garcia, Director of Brewing Operations at Lost
Rhino, since the day the Brewery opened.
This all-Virginia beer began to take shape when Jasper Akerboom, Lost Rhino's Brewery Scientist, was able to
successfully isolate a local Ashburn yeast strain for the Farmwell Wheat beer. With the successful fermentation of that
beer, Favio and Jasper had conquered the largest hurdle in brewing an all in-state beer. Since the Brewery uses locally
filtered water for all their brews, the next step was to source Virginia malt and hops. Fortunately, nearby Leesburg had a
hop grower; Sage Hill Hops, LLC, who provided whole leaf Cascade hops. From Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, Lost
Rhino obtained the same malt that Copper Fox uses to make whiskey. Favio traveled to Heathsville on the Northern Neck
to select unmalted wheat from Billy Dawson at Bay's Best Feed. With all the pieces in place, the brewing process began.
This will be a limited production release. Jasper is working on several new local yeast strains. He and Favio plan to create
several additional brews for the Genius Loci (Spirit of the Place) series. In addition to the yeast, this series will feature at
least one other Virginia grown ingredient |
| New River | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Pale Ale 5.4% ABV–34 IBU | Three hop additions in the boil and then gloriously dry hopped, New River is an extremely aromatic American-style pale ale. The use of American Crystal and Munich malts create sweetness in the finish that balances the hop bitterness. The blend of the Pacific Northwest hops Amarillo, Cascade, Columbus, and Centennial generates aroma and flavors of lemon citrus, pine, and touches of sweet tropical fruit. |
| Pretty in Pink | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Saison 5.8% ABV | In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, four women from four breweries came together to craft a beer for hope. Using the finest malts, two strains of hops, and an Ardennes yeast, then adding flavor, aroma, and hue with (hibiscus and pomegranate) they produced a brisk Saison. Slightly tart with subtle fruit-esters, hints of spice, and pink. The brewsters present this beer as a salute to the memory and bravery of those women and men fighting breast cancer, and as a toast to the day when we find the cure. Pretty in Pink: Awareness Ferments Hope. Collaboration between Lost Rhino, Bluejacket, Vintage 50, and Hardywood. |

| RhiNoel | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Belgian Dubbel 7.5% ABV–23 IBU | In the tradition of Trappist monks of Belgium we have brewed a Dubbel for our holiday brew. Dubbels are sweet brown ales with a spicy finish. We brewed this beer with Pilsner and Caramel Malts, as well as dark Candi Sugar. Candi Sugar is a traditional ingredient in Belgian beers that adds complexity to the sweet finish. Fresh yeast was added to this beer before packaging for further conditioning in the bottle and keg. Bottle conditioned beers will improve with age as the beer continues to ferment in the bottle. |

It rings in over 6% ABV and over 60 IBUs. The beer has a bouquet of Belgian yeast-derived flavors like bubblegum, fruit ester, and subtle spice. | Why Nut? | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Porter 6.5% ABV | Smooth with notes of banana, chocolate and peanut butter. (No allergens!) |
| Wild Farmwell Wheat | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Wheat Ale 5.3% ABV–30 IBU | Jasper Akerboom and Peter Lee are both scientists at Howard Hughes' Janelia Farm, located in Ashburn. Taking a scientific approach towards brewing (Jasper has a PhD in microbiology and food technology, Peter has worked in large-scale process and discovery chemistry in industry), they wanted to focus on beers brewed with locally isolated yeasts. Jasper isolated several interesting strains and brewed small-scale test batches. After meeting Lost Rhino brewmaster Favio Garcia, they knew they shared the same passion for locally crafted beer using local ingredients, including local yeast. The idea for a summer beer using local yeast was born. They teamed up and designed a hoppy wheat beer for summer: Wild Farmwell Wheat. Farmwell is the old name for Ashburn where we isolated the strain. |
| Wild Farmwell Wheat Unfiltered | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Wheat Ale 5.3% ABV–30 IBU | A true farmhouse ale, brewed with locally harvested yeast from Ashburn, Virginia, by Jasper Akerboom. Earthy, slightly tart, and generous carbonation. Fermented at high temperatures to get all the esters and phenolics out of this Saccharomyces cerevisiae "ashburnensis". Dry (0.9 degree Plato final gravity), this beer is refreshing, and will taste best in a stemmed glass after a days work in the field. |
| Woody Stout | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Stout 6.8% ABV–30 IBU | Roasted malts and herbal hops provide an aroma of coffee and spicy chocolate that blends with caramel, and vanilla notes that are products of the aging in the Bourbon soaked oak barrels. |
| Zlaty | | Lost Rhino Ashburn, VA | Pilsner 5.6% ABV–42 IBU | Zlatý Rhino is an American interpretation of a classic Bohemian-style Pilsner, which takes its name from the Czech word for "Golden". Brewed with imported floor-malted Bohemian spring barley (the Tolar and Bojos varieties) and 100% Czech Saaz hops, this beer brings a balance of malty sweetness and delicate bitterness, thanks to the use of a painstaking decoction mash schedule and long kettle boil. Modeled after the beer that won first prize in the inaugural Pilsner Urquell Master Homebrewer competition in Washington, DC in 2011, this is an easy- drinking beer for the warmer days ahead. As the Czechs say, "Na zdraví!" |
