When presented with a rare opportunity to obtain some freshly emptied tequila barrels, head brewer Brian Nelson acted quickly, identifying them as the perfect vessel for aging Super Singel, our Belgian Abbey-style tripel. The beer’s subtle tropical fruit aromatics harmonize unsuspectingly with a mellow briny character imparted by the tequila barrels. The result is one of the most unique beers we’ve ever tasted.

Imperial Milk Stout aged on Apple Brandy barrels. Pleasant sweet candy apple aroma accompanied by dark chocolate, toffee, and mellow apple brandy flavors. The finish is smooth and warming.

Pilot Series - A clean and flavorful porter brewed with lager yeast and cold conditioned for a smooth finish. This dark lager pours nearly opaque and presents a creamy khaki colored head. Cocoa, cherry, and vanilla dominate the aroma. Dark chocolate and black current flavors round out a delicate bitter and malty finish.

Trae from the Midnight Brewery and Eric and Patrick from Hardywood Park Craft Brewery were presented with "The Midnight Challenge" by Brown Distributing of Richmond, resulting in the first collaboration brew for both breweries. The challenge: come up with a unique recipe concept, source ingredients locally, and brew it before midnight. With the help of the Farm to Family Bus, Original Gravity Homebrew Supplies and RVABuzz.com, Hardywood Midnight Banana Pancakes beer, a maple weizenbock, was born.

The brewing teams from Hardywood of Richmond and Bluejacket of Washington, DC have collaborated on a triple IPA that showcases the rare and beautiful Azacca hop. Weighing in at 10.8% ABV with 100 IBUs, this beer is dry-hopped with over a pound per barrel of Yakima Valley Azacca hops, delivering alluring apricot, pear and grapefruit pith aromatics. A bold, jammy body leads to a warming, pleasantly bitter finish with hints of white pepper. Named for the Beaux-Arts architectural style popularized in Richmond and Washington, DC in the mid-19th century, this beer highlights the appreciation for classical style and creative approach to craftsmanship that has characterized these two great mid-Atlantic cities.

Aged for 4 months in second run apple brandy barrels on dried Michigan sweet cherries

They say some of the best inventions were created by mistake. That was certainly the case with Hardywood Belgian DIPA. Originally intended as the base beer for Hoplar, our wood aged American-style double IPA, this beer was fermented with the Belgian abbey-style ale yeast we use with Hardywood Singel. The resulting beer offers the assertive hoppy bitterness of Hoplar with the fruity, spicy character of Singel. An accident, yes, but a delicious one, indeed!

While it may be difficult to fully appreciate outside of its homeland, the breadth and diversity of the Czech brewing tradition extends far beyond a certain Ur-lager. Hardywood Bohemian Pils gives a nod to the wonderfully fresh and complex unfiltered pale lagers being produced in the brewpubs of Prague. Brewed with an heirloom variety of floor-malted barley from the Czech Republic, Hardywood Bohemian Pils features a rich, bready maltiness balanced by smooth bitterness and spiciness from the exclusive use of Czech Saaz hops. A traditional Czech lager yeast strain ties the whole package together, creating a refreshingly clean yet characterful flavor profile with a crisp finish. Na zdraví!

A sipping beer to the core, Barleywine by itself is a traditional British digestif. After months of maturation in Bourbon barrels, our barleywine mellows thoroughly, with a luxuriously rich mouthfeel and a soft, rounded finish. Smith Bowman Distillery, where earthy, vanilla, toffee and bourbon notes lend an exquisite mellowness to Bourbon DIPA.

Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as “freagin’ Christmas in a bottle,” is an imperial milk stout brewed with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Virginia bourbon barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with oak, caramel and bourbon undertones, and emerges 12 weeks later as Bourbon GBS. A festive blend of spice character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.

Bourbon Version brewed for Mekong's 18th Anniversary Event: Brewed in the style of the farmhouse ales of Belgium's southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin utilizes a blend of rye, wheat and barley in the grain bill, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar clove and whole allspice harmonize with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root.

Brian's Barrel Blend #4 brings together equal parts 2013 Bourbon Cru, 2013 barrel aged Hoplar, and 2013 barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout. Whoa! To add to the twist of bright hop bitterness and aroma, we blended in a bit of fresh Great Return as well. Confused yet? Come in and try it out. In 1935, Richmond, Virginia made beer history as the first place ever to sell canned beer, a cream ale from Krueger Brewing Company. A tribute to the original canned beer, Hardywood Cream Ale is an unfiltered example of the style that embraces its east coast roots with an unbelievably smooth body and a refreshingly clean finish from extended cold conditioning in our lagering tanks. Hardywood Forbidden is a Belgian white ale integrated with dragon fruit. The addition of the dragon fruit provides a subtle and pleasant sweetness to the flavor and aroma. Dragon Fruit amazingly changes the appearance to a bright pink color.

Brewed in honor of the Hardywood Twilight 4-Miler, Four Mile Weiss (pronounced like “vice”) is our sunset hued example of a Bavarian-style hefeweizen. Ruby-auburn tinted with a voluminous head, Four Mile Weiss lends a mellow aroma of caramelized bananas, clove, and bubblegum and offers some delicate spice in the flavor and an incredibly refreshing finish. The perfect libation to relax with after a four mile jaunt through a very cool town.

Goldrush, is a unique saison aged for 6 months in white wine barrels. Initially undergoing mixed primary fermentation with Saccharomyces Trois & Brettanomyces L, it was next refermented in freshly dumped petit Manseng wine barrels with unpasteurized Goldrush apple cider, pressed in Richmond, Va at Blue Bee Cider. This limited edition 100% bottle conditioned nectar features tart notes of lush white wine and juicy pineapple.

The Great Return, it is a 7.5% ABV West Coast-style IPA (dry hopped on Citra) brewed in collaboration with the James River Association in honor of the Atlantic Sturgeon returning to the James River. Hardywood is donating $10 for every barrel produced of the Great Return to the James River Association for their conservation efforts.

Große Teufel is Ken Rayher's take on the once nearly extinct Lichtenhainer - an Eastern German ale that strikes an exceptional balance between its smoked barley base and lactic acid tartness. Megafaunel wolves, Elasmothere, and the Megaloceros no longer roam the earth, but the Lichtenhainer lives on.

Große Teufel is Ken Rayher's take on the once nearly extinct Lichtenhainer - an Eastern German ale that strikes an exceptional balance between its smoked barley base and lactic acid tartness. Megafaunel wolves, Elasmothere, and the Megaloceros no longer roam the earth, but the Lichtenhainer lives on.

Unlike a traditional Hefeweizen, the HYPE Kristallweiss is clear in appearance and has subtle hints of banana, clove and notes of tangerine. Hardywood recognizes the awesomeness of YPs and brewed a beer in honor of the YPs who make RVA a great place to live, work and play. The HYPE Brew will be tapped at the 804UM after party on April 30th at Hardywood.

A showcase of the creativity and talent of beer passionate women in the craft brewing industry, Hoperation Pink is a collaboration beer brewed to raise funds for and awareness of women’s health issues. Hoperation Pink displays a beautifully vibrant pink grapefruit aroma, a wholesome body, and a balanced but assertive citrus hop bitterness in the finish. The Hardywood 2013 batch is dry-hopped on a massive addition of Citra hops. $100 per barrel of Hoperation Pink is contributed to non-profit organizations that support women’s health, with half going to VCU Massey Cancer Center and the other half going to local charitable causes selected by the participating brewers with each batch brewed. Thank you for helping us to fight against cancer and to improve the lives of women who face unexpected health challenges.

Hardywood Hoplar is mahogany in color with a hearty, tan head and offers an aroma of grapefruit brûlée and pine needles, as well as delicate vanilla toffee and a hint of campfire. Medium- to full-bodied with assertive (100 IBUs) yet delightful hop bitterness, Hoplar is balanced with ample caramel malt backbone. A bit of earthy tannin from the Poplar harmonizes with the resinous hoppy character, which dissipates into a lingering finish.

Hardywood Kentucky Christmas Morning is liquid proof that good things come to those who wait. Our original Gingerbread Stout takes an initial transformation through months of aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels, reaching new levels of maturity with layers of vanilla, coconut, and toasted oak. Before bottling, the barrel aged stout is cold filtered through heaps of freshly cracked locally roasted coffee beans, showcasing the nostalgic joys of Christmas Morning. Justin Anderson has been brewing beer at Hardywood since 2012. He has a particular interest in brewing saisons. Little Flowers is a special saison which celebrates anyone who follows their vocation in life. It's for the friends, family, and mentors that make that possible. The beer is simple, unembellished, and bottle conditioned. Rempe has been a tattooer since 2009 and specializes in American traditional style. Considerably inspired by old folk art from various countries, he incorporates fundamental heavy blacks with bursts of color in his artwork, which can be distinctly noted in the Little Flowers illustration. Rempe can be found at Lakeside Tattoo in Richmond, VA.

Peach Tripel with vanilla, cinnamon, and lactose

Hardywood Menagerie is diverse collection of aged beers, bound by the confines of bourbon and rum barrels. Double barrel aged and blended exclusively for the Gallery 5 fifth year anniversary, we aged our Russian Imperial Stout for over 3 months in Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrels. We then racked off a portion of the Stout into a Cruzan Rum barrel while adding equal parts of a Belgian triad consisting of Dubbel, Trippel, and Quadruppel. We then matured this blend of beer in the Cruzan barrels for another 5 months. This blend of beer creates a complex flavor and aromatic profile of tart cherry, dried apple, dark chocolate, vanilla and oak. A smooth yet warming finish captures the essence of the bourbon and rum barrels.

Brewed for "Movember"

Rich, dark auburn in color with a frothy cappuccino head, Mocha Belgique offers pleasant, fresh roasted coffee and cocoa aromatics with a hint of black currant. Chocolate character up front is enhanced with the fluffy mouthfeel imparted by our distinctive Belgian ale yeast. Black Hand’s well balanced coffee provides a lingering roasty finish.

New Zealand hops are known for their high alpha acid qualities best suited for bittering. We took a different approach in this New Zealand hop inspired pale ale. Using Green Bullet and Pacific Jade hops in the boil, this malty ale provides your taste buds with cracked peppercorns, capsicum, and a serious lingering grapefruit finish. Dry hopping exclusively with Pacific Jade hops creates a fresh floral and citrus aroma. Enjoy this fresh while it lasts.

To celebrate the official arrival of summer we present Peach Cru; a refreshing variant on our Bourbon Cru invigorated by the addition of juicy summer peaches!

The celebrated tradition of monastic brewing is perhaps best known for the dubbel, and stronger, brighter tripel styles, which are characterized by abbey yeast strains that create a delightful harmony of fruity esters and spicy phenols. Our tripel displays a voluminous head, a sunshine golden hue, notes of white pepper and honeysuckle, and is refermented on over 50 pounds per barrel of peaches, apricots and nectarines, lending a subtle but luscious stone fruit character, and a pleasantly dry finish.

Brewed in strict accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, this classic pilsner is the quintissential lager beer in its purest form. A tad drier than its Bohemian cousin with the signature snappy herbal spice of Bavarian Hallertau hops to balance delicate maltiness, this pils offers a nod to old world tradition by the innovative brewers at Hardywood. Hardywood’s 33 and 1/3 Black Vinyl Stout celebrates Plan 9’s vinyl record passion over the decades. We are sharing our groove with Plan 9 through the medium of liquid sound and have created a special stout for their 33 and 1/3 anniversary in Richmond. Our collaboration with Plan 9 brings forth the warmth of sound and flavor achieved with a full bodied stout (or a vinyl record) and a chorus of citrus flavors to complete the track. Cara Cara Oranges, Sumo Mandarins, and Kumquats harmonize together to compliment the deep chocolate malt backbone. Savor in stereo.

Immortalizing 15 years of high speed, high volume, high potency rock and roll with an American Black IPA in celebration of venerated Richmond hard rock group RPG. Hardywood RPG IPA is loud, bitter and inescapably black. An American Black IPA blasting crucial aromas of resin and citrus from the copious amounts of Simcoe, Centennial, and Amarillo hops. Midnight wheat layered with flaked barley and oat leave a silky mouth feel and the slightest hint of roast in the finish. Now turn that up for 15 more years! (7% abv)

A wet-hopped, American-style India Pale Ale with loads of fresh local Columbus, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial and Glacier hops, Hardywood RVA IPA displays a toasted auburn color with a vibrant, creamy head. Cedar, citrus and herbal notes pervade the aroma, while the flavor offers a floral character and a delightful, resinous mouthfeel that can only be achieved with an assertive dose of freshly harvested hops. Medium- to full-bodied, Hardywood RVA IPA finishes with lingering hints of grapefruit and honey.

This is a Bluejacket-Lost Rhino-Vintage 50-Hardywood Park collaboration. Yes, that’s right, Richmond’s very own Rachel Cardwell, Hardywood’s only female brewer, represented Hardywood Park in this collaboration for a great cause!

Brewed with heaps of chocolate malt, cacao nibs, and local, late season red raspberries from Agriberry Farm, Hardywood Raspberry Stout captures the essence of a decadent raspberry truffle in liquid form. A beguiling ale, this stout’s enticing cocoa aromatics build to a flavorful crescendo of full bodied dark chocolate, subsiding with a pleasantly sweet, tart raspberry jam laced finish.

IPA brewed with 100% Idaho 7 hops

Our Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, described by BeerAdvocate as "Freagin' Christmas in a bottle" is an imperial milk stout made with vanilla beans, cinnamon, fresh Casselmonte Farm baby ginger and Bearer Farms wildflower honey. Gingerbread Stout is then matured in Caribbean dark rum barrels, where it adapts an incredibly mellow character with a crescendo of gingerbread spice giving way to subtly sweet, lingering molasses and spiced rum notes and emerges 12 weeks later as Rum Barrel GBS. A festive blend of spice and character laces this rich, chocolatey stout, which warms the palate and the soul.

Hardywood Rum Pumpkin combines the nostalgic flavors and aromas of autumn with a soul warming, blackstrap molasses laced finish that can only be achieved through months of maturation in Caribbean dark rum barrels. Pleasantly mellow up front with a crescendo of pumpkin pie spice giving way to subtly sweet, lingering brown sugar and spiced rum notes, this beer might just bring new meaning to Thanksgiving.

The third barrel aged installment of our Mega Stout, Hardywood Ruse is aged for 18 months in The Winery at Bull Run Red Wine barrels. This beer has united port-like qualities with distinct dark chocolate and molasses characteristics. Oak and leather dominate the aromatics. Ruse finishes with a dry tannic, red wine flavor that lingers.

This traditional German-style bock beer is aged in freshly emptied rye whiskey barrels for eight weeks. Rye Barrel Bock is light and clean, washing over the palate with a rich toasted malt body and sweet caramel at it’s core, balanced by subtle charred oak, rye spice and dark fruits on the finish. 8.75% ABV

The "Special Bitter" version of this beer offered by Hardywood is very sessionable, at 3.8% ABV. A moderate caramel malt character and some fruity notes provide plenty of complexity and flavor to this beer, which beautifully complements citrusy, high alpha American aroma hops. Dry-hopped with slightly peppery horizon hops, this beer displays the high degree of balance that has become a signature of Hardywood's beers. A relatively dry finish keeps this beer both refreshing and enticing.

Our sessionable Dark Mild brings a refreshingly crisp moment of peace in your day of chaos. This mild ale brings with it light, roasted coffee and toffee aromas. A pleasant sweetness and classic English hop profile round out this beer that weighs in at an approachable 3.8% ABV and 21 IBU.

Hardywood Saison Rustica is a fresh, flavorful French Saison (Bière de Garde) brewed a heavy dose of malted rye, French Strisselspalt hops, and a touch of peppercorn and star anise.

Our quest to brew the quintessential coffee beer began over a cupping with the coffee gurus from Richmond’s Lamplighter Roasting Company. Their Ethiopia Sidamo coffee was masterfully roasted to highlight the single origin bean’s bright, crisp body and distinctive blueberry undertones, making it harmonize beautifully with our Russian Imperial Stout. May this beer warm your spirits in these brisk winter months.

American Porter

Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and uninhibited, Hardywood Singel is a feat in balance. Sunshine golden with a fluffy head and a veil of Belgian ale yeast, Singel’s tropical fruit esters complement its spicy hop aromatics. Delicate in body, Singel’s mellow, dry finish culminates a truly ethereal experience. Hardywood Singel's stylistic inspiration originates with the Trappist brewers of western Europe, who are often celebrated for their gloriously complex dubbels and tripels, and whose devotion to crafting heavenly libations is second to none. Unknown to many, some of the Trappist brewers also brew a milder ale for daily consumption within the walls of the monastery. Hardywood Singel is our interpretation of this style. Best with: Hardywood Singel is the perfect complement to savory southern fare like fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese, crab cakes and shrimp and grits, yet it's refreshingly delicate enough to tame the hottest Virginia summer day.

Hardywood Spirit Braid is a well attenuated, highly effervescent saison brewed with organic raw wheat from Grapewood Farm in Montross, Virginia. Seville and Cara Cara oranges bring brightness and a touch of acidity. Fermented in stainless with a blend of Nick’s favorite brewers yeast and Brettanomyces claussenii, this beer is unfiltered, 100% bottle conditioned, and is designed to be a crusher. Sara Gossett is an artist from Texas who has been living in Richmond, VA for nearly ten years. Working primarily with watercolor, she loves vintage style and design and is heavily inspired by everything from the eras of Art Nouveau and Art Deco to poster art and illustration from the 1960’s & ‘70’s, hand lettering, and decorative pattern from all over the world. A wheat based pale using both wheat, pale malts and the well-known Vienna malts. Throw in some Pacific and New Zealand hops and you have a soft but slightly bitter pale with great citrus and pepper in the nose.

German-style sour ale

Hardywood Sunnidalia is in collaboration with Starr Hill Brewery using a traditional Hefeweisen malt bill and Weihenstephaner yeast. We took it one step further and created a hoppy version of the traditional wheat beer by using copious amounts of Hull Melon hops and a touch of wildflower honey. This beer is uniquely aromatic and suitable for summer.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Belgian Quad with Coffee

Hardywood proudly combines forces with Cigar City Brewing of Tampa, Florida to bring you a whole new milk stout experience. Hardywood's Milkman Chocolate Milk Stout packs a full body and palate coating viscosity. Heaps of chocolate malts and a massive addition of gourmet cocoa nibs meld with a generous dose of milk sugar to satisfy the biggest chocolate craving.

A generous dose of hibiscus flowers lends a crimson tint and a hint of cranberry tartness to this tripel, melding harmoniously with subtle tropical fruit undertones and spicy phenolic notes from the abbey ale yeast. This beer is available exclusively at Trader Joe's (in 750mL bottles) and at Hardywood (on draft).

Hefeweizen with lime, passion fruit, and pineapple

Hardywood Tropication is a definitive liquid recess. Heaps of Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops send a wave of tropical fruit aromatics that burst on the palate with notes of passionfruit, lychee, mango, pineapple and lime. Smooth, bright and super juicy, Tropication is exotic escape from the daily grind. 7.5% ABV

Brewed in honor of the Hardywood Twilight 4-Miler, Four Mile Weiss (pronounced like “vice”) is our sunset hued example of a Bavarian-style hefeweizen. Ruby-auburn tinted with a voluminous head, Four Mile Weiss lends a mellow aroma of caramelized bananas, clove, and bubblegum and offers some delicate spice in the flavor and an incredibly refreshing finish. The perfect libation to relax with after a four mile jaunt through a very cool town.

The embodiment of true Virginia hospitality, Hardywood VIPA offers alluring tropical aromatics, a refreshingly delicate body and a bright, juicy finish. Heirloom Virginia barley rounds out the malt bill and creates a perfect sense of balance with a dose of citrusy Virginia hops. VIPA is our take on a Virginia India Pale Ale, or as we like to call it, Virgindia Pale Ale. Our interpretation of a Virginia IPA is crafted with locally sourced ingredients, from golden barley grown in the coastal plains to hops cultivated in the Appalachian piedmont. Pleasantly refreshing on the humid days of summer, but flavorful enough to satisfy on a cool winter evening, VIPA is just one more reason Virginia is for lovers. Hardywood VIPA is the culmination of an extensive development process that included a search for the finest Virginia-sourced ingredients we could find. VIPA proudly features Virginia-grown hops from Piedmont Hops, LLC, Huguenot Hops and Misty Mill Hops at Rockmill Farm, as well as two-row barley grown by Bay's Best Feed in Heathsville, VA and malted at Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, VA.

Named after the Roman festival held to bless and sample the wine of the previous season, Vinalia Urbana, a Belgian-style strong golden ale, is aged for months in freshly emptied Sauvignon Blanc barrels. This maturation process lends some light vinous notes and a hint of oak that blend beautifully with the subtle fruit and light spicy character imparted by the Belgian yeast. Vinalia Urbana is delightfully dry and delicate on the palate with lingering white grape and stone fruit undertones.

As night falls on the 30th of April, people across Europe come together to revel around bonfires, dance, and be merry. Known in Germany as Walpurgisnacht, the festival commemorates the arrival of spring in a folklore-steeped celebration meant to ward off the last evil spirits of winter. Hardywood Walpurgisnacht takes cue from its namesake, welcoming spring with a traditional Maibock brewed with Pilsner, Munich, and Vienna malts that's accentuated with a generous helping of beechwood-smoked malt, lending a mellow smokey character to this rich, deep-golden lager.
