Lemongrass Blonde Ale brewed with Sabro Hops! The idea for this beer was originally conceived in 2019 to celebrate Women's Equality Day (commemorating the passage of the 19th Amendment, starting the process of giving women the Constitutional right to vote). The third annual release of 39 Words -- named after the number of words in the 19th Amendment, certified to the U.S. Constitution on August 26th, 1920 -- is a Blonde Ale brewed with Lemongrass and Sabro hops. Light, crisp, and refreshing.

The 2022 vintage (the fourth iteration of 39 Words) will be released for Women's Equality Day! The Women of VBC design & brew a completely new recipe for 39 Words each year. The name 39 Words represents the number of words in the 19th Amendment, starting the process of guaranteeing women's right to vote. The 2022 recipe is a Malt Liquor and will be available in 19.2 oz. cans...the first time we've released a small batch beer in 19.2 oz. cans! The theme: A Strong Beer Brewed For All Women.

Did you know that Brewer Brad Adams once had an aspiring career as an up & coming latex salesman? Luckily for us he found a passion for craft beer and now we're proud to present Brad’s first-ever can release hits the Taproom! A Beer About Nothing is a 5% abv yada-yada recipe brewed with New Zealand Taiheke hops. Who’s going to turn down a New Zealand-style Pilsner? It’s fruity, it’s refreshing, it’s delicious!

A 100% Nectaron India Pale Ale — — — Seven and a half years ago, we brewed our first big India Pale Ale at 401 Second Street in Williamsburg. Nectaron, the hop, wasn't even available — compounding our lack of experience, organization, or a planned tap list long enough to last two openings. The brew day went well enough and soon we were brewing a series of weekly IPA's – three hop additions per brew via First Wort, Whirlpool, and Dry-Hop.

About Time is a Maibock – a strong, Bavarian-Style Lager – released on May Day to celebrate the transition of seasons. Constructed with a traditional Pilsner malt backbone and drops of Hallertau Mittlefrüh & Hersbrucker, providing noble hop aromas and a subtly spicy and fragrant floral finish. And at 7% abv, this crisp and naturally carbonated Maibock will warm you just enough to wait out the time until the summer beer garden season begins.

Hazy Cryo Pop Pale Ale Featuring: — Cryo Pop® Original Blend (tropical waterfall, juicy stone fruit) — Cashmere dry-hop (zesty, citrusy, fresh) — Crocs on the label (for some reason)

Afterglow is a small batch India Pale Ale brewed with a dual hop bill of dual high alpha Waimea and Denali hops (dry-hopped at a rate of 3+ lbs. per bbl). Blending crisp mouthefeel (thanks to a markedly Pilsner backbone) with bite akin to a West Coast IPA, Waimea & Denali combine to make an ambrosial recipe that delights with tremendous aromatics before it satiates with flavors of pineapple, citrus, and pine.

Our take on An American Original -- All-Star Cream Ale is a mild, easy drinking lager-like recipe. Glowing golden, this light-bodied brew has a touch of flaked corn added for a creamy, mildly sweet, clean finish.

We avoided overanalyzing this recipe by deciding to pair the classic bright orange and tropical notes of Citra hops with the ripe pineapple flavors and aromas of Sultana hops. The result is a hazy, unfiltered IPA with the slightest hint of bitterness to round out the juicy hop profile.

Apple Brandy Double Evil Santa is an Imperial Spiced Holiday Milk Stout with a warming 11.3% ABV suited for the coldest of winter nights. A stronger version of Evil Santa, this DOUBLE variant has been aged in Apple Brandy Barrels for nine months. Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and Allspice are complemented by the sweet & creamy notes that arise from extended barrel aging.

Brettanomyces is a species of wild yeast normally seen as a threat in the brewery, but we love the fruity and funky flavors it can produce when used with intention. Our house blend of Brettanomyces strains, one Belgian in origin and the other isolated from a Virginia orchard, is sourced from RVA Yeast Labs LLC in Richmond, VA. Apricot Orchard is the third of many 100% Brett beers to come to 401. Re-fermented on 200 pounds of pureed apricots, Apricot Orchard features a fruity and slightly funky fermentation character that blends with the acidity of the fruit to create a lightly tart, fruit forward beer. The lone hop addition of Azacca in the whirlpool adds soft bitterness and a layer of tropical fruit complexity to the flavor and aroma. Grain Bill: Bohemian Pilsner, Wheat, and Flaked Oats. Hops: Azacca. Adjuncts: Apricots.

Aurora is VBC's first-ever Cold IPA. Brewed with piney Chinook & citrusy Citra hops — cold-fermented with Lager yeast — and finished with a late dry-hop featuring floral Centennial to allow the hop-forward focus of the style to shine through.  Leaning towards the West Coast family of India Pale Ales – but featuring additions of Flaked Rice that help showcase a dry & crisp variant frosted with potent lupulin-forward characteristics that thaw directly into a refreshing, clean finish.

Collab with Ross Brewing Co. To celebrate warm welcomes near & far, we teamed with the crew from Ross Brewing to release a series of Winter-themed Porters. Baltic Winter is the epitome of the recipe you concoct in your mind when dreaming of a dark and sippable Baltic Porter. Cold-fermented with a robust 8.0% abv fit for warming during the colder months, this recipe is worth the trip and the wait. Notes of chocolate and candied figs, with a hefty malt backone and a clean Lager-like finish.

Gelato Terpene-Infused Hazy IPA - - - - - Inspired by the famous Gelato strain, the terpene blend (from our friends at Abstrax Tech in California) selected for this Hazy IPA recipes adds essence of berries & cream, with uplifting effects on the flavour profiles of this entry into the Be Kind series. The Gelato Terpene blend heightens the subtle dank notes of Mosaic and the gentle fruit-forward hues added by Ariana hops. A cool and calming infusion that intertwines itself into a soft Hazy IPA.

Be Kind: Pineapple Express is a mellow 7.0% abv West Coast-Style India Pale Ale dry-hopped with Simcoe, then infused with Pineapple Express Terpene -- a water-soluble complex created from essential oils of plants -- from our friends at Abstrax Tech in California. Crisp and resiny with a touch of dank, with subtle tropical notes that create a West Coast IPA profile with dabs of sticky-sweet pineapple upside-down cake.

STRAWBERRY. BANANA. IPA. This summer-inspired concoction created by Brewer B. Adams is a bright red bounty of luscious liquid. Brewed with strawberry puree and swirling with just-ripened sweet red berry flavor, paired with hints of freshly peeled bananas provided by an experimental Hefeweizen yeast strain that removes the traditional clove notes of that style. Just enough of a bite to remind you it's still an IPA, and plenty of fruity flavor to take your palate to tropical places near & far.

Bellissimo is an homage to a special type of Pilsner. Unlike traditional German or Czech-style Pilsners, Italian-style Pilsners are unique in that they are dry-hopped with German noble hop varieties that feature spicy, herbal, and floral aromas. The name is also an homage to one of our favorite spots here in Williamsburg. 2% Table Saison - - - This tiny recipe has all the complex phenols & spice notes of a traditional rustic Farmhouse Ale, but is brewed in the low alcohol style of a sessionable Table Beer. A surprising nose akin to a warming clove spice blend is quickly followed by crisp bready notes and a clean, dry finish. Originally brewed in celebration of #MildMonthUS in May, with a focus on brewing with U.K. ingredients in celebration of the traditional Mild style. A touch of Biscuit Malt. A hint of Honey Malt. Our Black Lager is an homage to the traditional German-style Schwarzbier. German for “black beer,” this Schwarzbier is a light-bodied, mildly bitter dark lager brewed with roasted malts. Imperial Oatmeal Porter brewed with Aromas Coffee, Cacao Nibs, & Milk Sugar - – - A smooth and sturdy brunch beverage to set you up or settle you down, depending on which side of the table you find yourself seated. Aged on Aromas coffee beans, with additions of chocolate and lactose to create a smooth blend of warming flavors wrapped in a robust Imperial Porter brewed with healthy amounts of flaked oats. Our ode to officially saying goodbye to 2020 in the most fitting way we know how.

So one day we diverted regular Free Verse wort to a different fermentation vessel, where it was fermented solely with a strain of Brettanomyces isolated from a respected Belgian Lambic producer. As opposed to the ale yeast used to ferment traditional Free Verse, this Brett fermentation showcases distinct pineapple and overripe mango flavors with a touch of tropical funk. The beer received the standard Free Verse dry-hopping treatment in order to maximize hop aroma.

Bridles & Boots is a 5.3% abv Golden Ale brewed with Golden Promise malt and a touch of bright Centennial hops. Flaxen and crisp -- enjoying this easy drinking, mildly sweet, sessionable ale is like feeling the wind flowing through your hair as you gallop with your favorite steed across the open fields of Toano. Named for Bridles & Boots -- one of the marquee fundraisers held annually by/for Dream Catchers, which has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to the ongoing pandemic.

Oak Barrel-Fermented Blended Farmhouse Ale aged exclusively in White Wine Barrels with Brettanomyces. Blended from multiple barrels and bottle-conditioned since April 2019; fit for extended aging. - Three white barrels in the blend aged 18 months. - Bottle conditioned with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. - Finishes with just a touch of pineapple tartness, but is far from acidic. - Extremely dry and crisp with a slightly oaky/tannic finish that accentuates the dryness.

Oak Barrel-Fermented Blended Farmhouse Ale aged exclusively in Red Wine Barrels with Brettanomyces for two years. - Blended from three red wine barrels with three different Saison and Brettanomyces yeast blends. - Aged for 24 months before bottling with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis in November 2019. - Initial nose of oaky red wine gives way to funky impressions of overripe tropical fruit and fresh hay. - Extremely dry with a crisp effervescence and a pleasant oakiness in the finish.

An oak wine barrel-fermented Brett Farmhouse Ale blend, keg-conditioned and bottle-conditioned with Brettanomyces since April 2020.

A bottle conditioned Brett Farmhouse Ale blended from white and red wine barrels aged between 18 and 30 months. The aroma is Brett forward with peaches and barnyard hay funk. Slight acidity and overripe peaches are layered with a restrained funk character in the flavor. Minimal oak/wine character overall. The blend has prickly carbonation with good body for such a dry beer.

An oak wine barrel-fermented Brett Farmhouse Ale blend, keg-conditioned and bottle-conditioned with Brettanomyces since Jan. 2021. – – – Barrel-fermented blend of three Red Wine barrels, with multiple Brettanomyces and Saison yeast strains. Bottle-conditioned with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis since September 2021. – Nice aromatics of zest and white grape on the nose. – Zesty citrus notes carry into the flavor, with a mulled, sweet finish. – Soft with a pleasant oaky swirl in every sip.

Cherry Cordial Waypost is a Cherry Brandy Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout aged with Cacao Nibs. Designed to emulate a chocolate-covered cherry, the result of our patience is a 10.4% abv Imperial Stout with a smooth, rich body. A dark base blending hefty amounts of Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, and Midnight Wheat creates a robust, jet black beer softened with additions of Flaked Oats.

Dessert Baltic Porter Collaboration with Ross Brewing Co. This limited variant of Baltic Winter is finished with Cinnamon Sticks, Vanilla Beans, and Cacao Nibs. The perfect dessert to drink as the fire gets stoked for a second round of fresh pours and fruitful conversation.

A Hazy India Pale Ale that oscillates across fruity & refreshing and dank & complex. Bright Centennial and tropical Azacca combine for an ambrosial whirlpool wonderland, with a kaleidoscope of berry and citrus hued Ariana added to the dry-hop. Coconut Praline Waypost is a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout finished with Coconut & Pecans. The result of our patience is a 10.4% abv Imperial Stout with a smooth, rich body. A dark base blending hefty amounts of Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, and Midnight Wheat creates a robust, jet black beer softened with additions of Flaked Oats.

A clear-as-can-be Experimenal India Pale Ale fermented with Lager yeast! Cold Case is the third in VBC’s series of Cold IPA releases, coming in hot this April. Brewed with sweet & aromatic Azacca (previously called ADHA-483) hops — cold-fermented with Lager yeast — and finished with a late dry-hop featuring YCH’s experimental HBC 586 hops (permanent name still under investigation…) to allow the hop-forward focus of the style to shine through.

Known as the "beer of the miners", a Grisette is a Belgian-style ale with similarities to a Saison (aka, the "beer of the farmers"). Golden and crisp, Grisettes are lighter than Saisons. As such, Contact On Second features the same yeast strain used in our People Power Saison with a simple body brewed with Bohemian Pilsner & Wheat. Delicate additions of Huell Melon hops add subtle notes of honeydew and berry to produce an even-balanced, light beer to brighten even the longest of days.

Cool Inside is a cellar-Keller...aka, our small batch Heritage Corn Lager brewed with Virginia-grown/malted Bloody Butcher Corn. This Kellerbier was created with 100% Murphy & Rude Virginia-grown Pilsner Malt and Bloody Butcher Corn. Smooth, clear, & sweet, with a pleasingly dry finish. Czech Pale Lager

Saaz are traditinally Czech hops, and Bohemia is a part of the Czech state. Grisettes were traditionally a beer for the miners/workers - the cousin of the traditional Belgian Saison brewed for the farmers. The OG name behind this beer was "Bohemian Holiday" as it's a beer to be sipped while on a long, deserved break from the rigors of work. Then we accidentally ordered American Saaz hops. Same hop flavor, same bright aromas, same crisp, finish, different hop origin.

A study in concentrated British malt character. In fact our brewers used so much malt in this bbl batch that they had to use our 35bbl mash tun because it wouldn’t come close to fitting in our 5bbl mash tun. The wort for this recipe was boiled for four hours (instead of 60 minutes) to concentrate the malt flavor and add prominent kettle caramelization character. Flavors of figs, plums, and burnt caramel. Just enough hops to balance the malt to keep it from being too sweet. And a warming finish.

Friends Of Dorothy is a beautifully bright 7.3% abv IPA. It's dry-hopped with an eclectic mix of rotating hops to showcase flavors from around the world coming together as one. The original recipe was complemented by South African Southern Passion (our first time using those hops) and potent YCH Amarillo CryoHops. The current batch features tropical Azacca (our favorite hops to use, featured in Free Verse) and the prominent pineapple notes provided by BRU-1 hops.  #LOVEWINS

Part of our experimental IPA series, this recipe is the dank cousin of Fresh Powder. Featuring the same Citra Lupulin Powder used in Fresh Powder, Frozen Bales also contains a healthy dose of Simcoe Lupulin Powder. Not content to be out-shown by its cousin, this small batch IPA received a copious dry hop of 3 LBS per BBL with Citra + Simcoe and 1 LB of Mosaic for good measure. The result is a confluence of tropical & citrus flavors with an assertive bitterness and hints of grassy & dank notes. And unlike most of our slightly dank cousins, this offering is clean, crisp, and one with which you'll be sure to enjoy visiting early and often.

A Double IPA brewed with Citra Lupulin Powder and re-fermented on Mango purée, Funny Trees features a fruity and slightly funky fermentation character provided by Brettanomyces. Blended with the flavor of mango and and potent Citra lupulin powder, then a healthy dry-hop with refreshing Citra + fruit-forward Mandarina hops. The result is a crisp, flavor-forward Double India Pale Ale less concerned with bitterness and more focused on pleasing the palate with a panoply of layers.

We love teaming with community organizations to find creative ways to give back, and we're doing just that as we partner with Dream Catchers of Williamsburg for the release of Giddy Up! Brewed with tropical Sabro hops and dry-hopped with a cherry-forward Idaho Gem varietal, this Hazy Pale Ale is saddled with notes of Piña Colada, and fields of subtle dank grazing at the finish. Proceeds from draft + can sales of this recipe will be donated to support the ongoing programming of Dream Catchers.

Due to the malt-forward nature of English Ales, look for prominent notes of toasted malt and caramel sweetness from English Crystal Malt. Estery English yeast then adds a fruity complexity to that malt character. Expect earthy hop aromas & flavours from CTZ and EKG, with a prominent and lingering bitterness due to water treatment to mimic Burton-On-Trent’s high sulfate water.

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Brown Ale

An original 18th century recipe brewed with Frank Clark. A traditional colonial-era Brown Ale built from a blend of roasted grains – including Roasted Barley, Cherrywood Smoke Malt, and Murphy & Rude Cimmerian Brown Malt. Then aged in Oak Barrels with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis and Native Virginia Wild Yeast. A result worth the wait, and as complex as it sounds: hints of oak & smoke – warmly malty with notes of toasted breadcrumbs – and a luscious funk fused into a palatably dry finish.

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Smoked Porter. Keepsake is an imperial version of our opening day Smoked Porter. Brewed with Pecan Smoked malt from Corsair Distillery in Nashville, TN then aged in Heaven Hill Distilleries bourbon barrels since June. A hint of campfire from the Pecan Smoked malt pairs with sweet notes of vanilla from the time in bourbon barrels to combine for a rich, flavorful finish. Kentucky Vanilla Waypost is a Vanilla Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. Consisting of a blend of barrel-aged Anniversary Stouts, 75% having aged in Vanilla Barrels while the other 25% was blended in from Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels. The result of our patience is a 10.4% abv Imperial Stout with a smooth, rich body. A dark base blending hefty amounts of Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, and Midnight Wheat creates a robust, jet black beer softened with additions of Flaked Oats.

A soft + juicy India Pale Ale single-hopped with SIXTEEN LBS. of Mandarina hops. To quote YCH: "Bred at the Hop Research Institute in Hüll, Mandarina Bavaria displays pleasant fruitiness in finished beers." These hops complement the yeast strain used in our small batch Experimental IPA series, blending a touch of sweet vanilla to a well balanced and clean-finishing hop bomb. Our dark & smooth flagship Stout spent more than six months aging in barrels that were originally used for rum production in Trinidad and Barbados. Brewed with bright Citra and dank Strata hops, this DIPA is awash with a sea of passion fruit, citrus, and pine flavors. Shining bright like the sun over the beaches of SaMo, this is a pristinely golden and clean-finishing beer that belies an 8.5% backbone. An homage to classic, clear, hop-forward Double IPA's.

The base recipe for VBC's City Plus Coffee Porter, this naked Porter features a blend of Brown and Chocolate malts. The resulting grain bill provides subtle notes of burnt toast and sweet breadiness. Flaked oats provide a smooth texture that belies a dark, robust offering. Now pleasing palates at 401 Second Street.

Palmer's Porter is a 6.0% ABV English-style Porter brewed in collaboration with Mellow Mushroom Newport News & Mellow Mushroom Williamsburg. Smooth and rich, this Porter was mellowed over time to allow sticky notes of Molasses to round out flavors of semi-sweet chocolate. A beer brewed with the soul (and rumored secret ingredient) of Mellow Mushroom's iconic dough, and the perfect pairing to celebrate the Grand Opening of Mellow Mushroom Williamsburg in October 2018!

An 8.5% abv Kveik Double India Pale Ale. Smooth & balanced with a medium body and mild haze. Dry-hopping with Kohatu and Moutere produce swirling notes of pineapple, prominent from the very start on the nose and teeming with bursts of tropical fruit all the way through the finish. Wait...what? A Czech-Style Half-Dark Lager...aka, a Czech Amber Lager! So...the name? Polotmavý = “half dark” (ie, a lighter version of a Czech Dark...or “tmavý”...Lager)! So...why is 12° on the label? The starting gravity in Plato degree (typically displayed on Czech beer labels) for an Amber is usually 12° P! So...what should I expect? The latest recipe from brewer Brad Adams (aka, "The Architect") is a Hoppy Pale Ale brewed with Styrian Wolf & Taiheke hops. Styrian Wolf hops are best described as bursting with notes of ripened strawberries. Pair with grassy notes from Taiheke, and you have yourself a field of fresh summertime flavors here to warm palates in the midst of Ice Town. That's the whole thing. That's three weeks of work. In our heads it's really, really cool. And we'd even go so far as to compare it to Avatar.

Rumour Mill is the first of many 100% Brett beers to come to 401 and features the citrusy flavors of Amarillo & Centennial hops to accentuate the fruity character of the yeast. This golden Saison is the result of an exclusively rustic primary fermentation - skipping the stainless steel vessels in favor of fermenting for five months in 2009 Hungarian oak red wine barrels! Upon transfer from the kettle, four known yeast strains were then added directly to the barrels: a traditional Saison; a "wild" Belgian strain of Saccharomyces; and two strains of Brettanomyces (one Belgian + one Virginian). Exceptionally dry while retaining a full body thanks to the additions of flaked oats and malted spelt. Nelson Sauvin hops lend a white wine character that balances well with the mild Brett fruity funkiness and oak. Grain Bill: Bohemian Pilsner, Spelt, and Flaked Oats. Hops: Nelson Sauvin. Aging: Williamsburg Winery 2009 Hungarian oak red wine barrels.

The estery base of a traditional Saison is softened by mixed fermentation with Orchard Brett and 30 gallons of Stayman Apple Juice. Sweet and spicy with a hint of tartness accentuated by flavors of sweet fruit from additions of Nelson Sauvin hops.

All work and no play make us go something something... This India Pale Ale is brewed with unmalted Wheat and Flaked Oats, giving it a smooth body that belies its drinkable 5.7% abv. A dark base blending hefty amounts of Chocolate Malt, Roasted Barley, and Midnight Wheat creates a robust, jet black beer softened with additions of Flaked Oats. Waypost is inextricably linked to its barrel-aged variants, Waypost: Black, Waypost: Red, and Waypost: Purple, by unifying accents of chocolate on the finish.

Waypost Neat is a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. The standard bearer for The Virginia Beer Company's annual Anniversary Stout releases, we age a select amount of Waypost in different Bourbon Barrels each year. Slated for release annually in late March, 2021's vintage was aged in Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels.
